about us

our journey

In 2019, LACEPS led the organization through its initial programming efforts in family and civic engagement, hosting Family Summits, co-chairing candidate forums, and advocating for charter schools at local, state, and federal levels. These efforts brought together the leadership of the member schools to plan together and collectively engage charter-school families in civic issues.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, LACEPS became a crucial support system, facilitating collaboration among member schools to address unprecedented challenges such as transitioning to online learning, providing meals for students, and vaccinating families and staff. Our schools are more than academic institutions; they are hubs for families, support the mental and physical health and wellness of kids, provide regular meals, and care for kids before school starts in the morning and hours after the official school day ends. During the pandemic, these supports were given in different ways but this philosophy was never more true.

a community schools model

In essence, LACEPS member schools have been following a community schools model since before it was a formal program. The initiation of the Community Schools program by the State of California gave a name to the types of schools that our networks have always run – whole-child, community-embedded, deeply integrated teams of staff who do whatever it takes to meet students’ diverse needs.

In 2022, LACEPS ushered in a new era of strategic growth. Building on the coalition’s early successes and the cohesiveness that emerged during the pandemic, LACEPS implemented a strategic plan designed to deepen collaboration among members, focusing on elevating the quality of education for the most vulnerable students.

LACEPS Today

Our mission is to empower Los Angeles’ leading public nonprofit charter schools to collaborate with one another, advocate for policies that accelerate learning, and deliver the best possible education to the most vulnerable kids.

We envision a Los Angeles where every kid attends a great public school and leaders work together to uphold an innovative, high-quality education system, designed to meet the unique needs of all students.

As a group, LACEPS members meet with elected officials, community leaders, and other partner organizations to advocate for our students and families.

When necessary, we collaborate with these leaders and organizations to support policy positions that matter to our families and communities.

Finally, and most importantly, LACEPS members proactively identify the toughest challenges facing our students and activate to make change on these issues.
